Fuels for Schools
Focus on Energy has just released a new report which analyzed the feasibility of woody biomass heating systems for schools in Wisconsin. Turns out there are already a dozen schools doing this with half here in our own backyard in NW WI. To link to the report see their case studies page linked here.

In the Rice Lake case study they mention that a large percentage of Rice Lake was at one time heated from the waste heat of a dairy plant.
I also learned that pelletized wood looks exactly like the cat litter I buy that is made from recycled paper.
Thanks Andrew, this is great stuff. I have been working on some planning activities (Safe Routes To School) in some communities in our part of the state, and I think that educating these communities about these possibilities is a huge part of it. A lot of these communities are no less "progressive" than the communities that are doing it now, they just often lack the resources to know everything that is happening out there (for example fuels for schools). I would have to think that most communities would be onboard to at least learn more about these options.
Aaron, apparently that Rice Lake system is still there - according to a fella I talked with the other day. I'd be curious to research this district heat thing a bit more to see how many communities had these things - like the old trolley car systems that were so ubiquitous not too long ago.
